I'll be offering wet and dry lab analysis services for industry and academia. Main area as you can see from below is genetics. Many years of experience in any kind of DNA lab work and population genetic analysis, but anything goes really. Can also do field work, project planning, literature searches, supervision, advisory etc. I decided to go for it and start up on my own, as I found that I like puzzling with this and that. Quite like odd and small jobs at the moment and don't fancy any big project for several years. So, you can hire me from a day onwards to however long you like.

Main project area was landscape genetics. First project in this area looked into wood crickets (Nemobius sylvestris) on the Isle of Wight. Second project was on wood ants (Formica aquilonia) in Scotland. The aim behind both projects was to detect the possible effects of forest fragmentation on the population genetics of a forest dwelling species. We also wanted to identify possible barriers and corridors to geneflow between populations in fragmented landscapes. The results of the population genetic study will be incorporated with landscape ecological models and hopefully the results will be informative enough to improve the current landscape ecological modelling.Other tasks besides the main project area have included determining species from poo samples. I've gone through literally several thousands of fox and pine marten scats to determine whether they have been called correctly in the field. This has been done through realtime PCR method, although recently we have been able to sequence part of the mitochondrial genome directly. Then a diversion to ecology: planning and execution of an experiment to see whether we can make aspen flower in a greenhouse setting. Aspen flowers very seldomly in Scotland (wrong type of climate) and since there is a great demand for it, we're trying to twist its branch to go ahead and reproduce. After 4 years of experimenting with different stress factors, we finally managed to get the aspen flower. This will be welcome news to the Scottish providers of aspen. Also devoted part of my time to real ecology by looking into three different data sets: 1. Vegetation data analysis from a Scottish butterfly reserve; does certain type of management procedure of the reserve help matters. 2. Juniper regeneration data analysis in Scotland. 3. Sorting out conifer species cone collection data spanning about 50 years. What can I say, I start to be a real jack-of-all-trades.

Exploring genetic variation in wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum). Parts included: constructing a genetic linkage map of wild barley; genetic, environmental and phenotypic variation in wild barley accessions; association mapping in wild barley using accessions and comparing the results with a QTL study done in a cross; QTL mapping of dormancy. Also got real handy in bagging them awns in a baking hot greenhouse weeks on end... Working on producing more chicken microsatellites. Did everything from isolating the chicken (or actually it was a cockerel) DNA to genotyping families for the new markers. No-one does it this way anymore, though... sigh. Techonology just keeps on moving forward and makes things easier!

MSc study (gradu) lab work part. Estimating genetic variation and divergence in eight chicken lines using microsatellites as markers. Got real experienced in producing fine glass pipettes for embryo-work. Also had fun collecting bovine testes and ovaries from nearby slaughterhouse. Got also a real project after an initial month of being a busybody: genotyping bulls for their kappa-casein type. This was the first time I was allowed to do PCR! Whoho, that was nervewrecking, but it has since become real commonplace... Well, it still can get ones nerves shot...
