    Temporal and qualitative expression of the antiviral cytokine IFN-beta appears stochastic at single-cell level (Rand et al., Mol Sys Biol 2012). Yet, major factors involved in viral recognition by the cell and signal transduction to activate IFN genes are known. Transcription factors NF-kB and IRF-3 play the central role with unknown dynamics. Is it possible to predict cellular IFN expression upon viral infection from detailed knowledge on signalling dynamics? I am pursueing this question using state-of-the-art imaging techniques at single cell and tissue level combined with theoretical approaches in the lab of Prof. Mike White.This profect is funded by an outgoing postdoctoral scholarship provided by the German Research Association (DFG)
