A "senior" engineer at Kratos involves shouldering more responsibilities than traditionally associated with the title - having direct reports, some project management duties, and team coordination, along with good technical knowledge. My duties include:• Managing a small team of three engineers to write software for our scientific instruments, ranging from new ways of processing/visualising data to supporting new hardware features• Lead role in numerous projects, including: a novel data processing package, software support for a new instrument, novel mass alignment feature, implementing mass spec imaging on existing benchtop instrument• Collaborating with scientists and engineers using fast prototyping to convey ideas and confirm understanding• Communicating scientific concepts, ideas and requirements to colleagues with no scientific background• Representing the company at scientific conferences (mainly ASMS), interacting directly with collaborators and customers

• Writing software to support our scientific instruments, including new data analysis algorithms and instrument features.• Liaising with firmware/electronics engineers to correctly implement instrument control systems, that were complex under the hood but simple for the user.

During years 2-4 of my PhD at Bristol University I held the following teaching positions at various times:• Tutor for a group of around ten first-year physics students guiding them through weekly problem sets.• Teaching assistant for fortnightly mathematics workshops for second-year physics students.• Lab demonstrator/teaching assistant for the Mass Spectrometry workshops for third-year chemistry students.
