About Ulrik Beste

A person with broad practical know-how in combination with high theoretical education. The base is in documented social skills, pedagogical talents and large competences in project leading, materials science, tribology, automotive technology, metal atomisation, rock drilling and Additive Manufacturing (3D-printing). On the same time, he can adjust the diesel pump on an old backhoe loader. Ulrik has also been active in theatrical comedies in many years and can “talk to farmers on the farmers' way and with learned men in Latin”. The interests are research, project leading in engineering, materials technology, energy, and especially a combination of these. Today, the daily work is put on additive manufacturing of high strength metals and materials science, cemented carbides and tribology. As a founder of one pioneer company in additive manufacturing of wear resistant materials, he also act as a presentator in materials science, rock drill wear and tribology. The presentations are often highly appreciated.

    As the CTO of VBN Components AB, I work with additive manufacturing (often called "3D-printing" or "free forming") of metallic high strength materials components based on metal powder. VBN are working in the paradigm shift in the component manufacturing industry, where the traditional separate material and component manufacturing is connected into free forming, where material and component manufacturing are combined. This opens up for a rationalisation leap in metal industry, where the large number of process steps can be heavily reduced on the same time as better material in the end application can be chosen. In addition, all AM features of the produced parts can be used to increase the performance. At VBN Components, I am responsible for the industrial additive manufacturing process, materials and their applications. I also hold presentations of about additive manufacturing, powder based materials, tribology and cemented carbide wear in rock drilling.
