About Umar Moghul
Umar is passionate about responsible and impact investing and the potential of partnerships among business and investment, philanthropy, and development. For over 20 years, Umar has designed a variety of corporate and investment platforms and vehicles. Much of his work has been on behalf of faith-based and other responsible sponsors, investors, and business owners, seeking positive impact. Clients call on Umar to design socially responsible and environmentally conscious legal and business terms to help create participatory, inclusive, and more responsible transactions, markets, and economies. Umar’s work includes structuring a variety of funds and investment vehicles, private equity and venture capital, a broad array of real estate initiatives, joint ventures and strategic alliances. He has additionally designed innovative mortgage products. More recently, he had assisted in the design of Zakat eligible projects and endowments (waqf) for various Muslim community initiatives in the US and abroad. Umar has represented clients in the energy, healthcare, technology, real estate, transport and logistics, and business services sectors across North America, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and East Asia. In the aggregate, he has advised on matters worth in excess of $10 billion. His clients have included sponsors, financial institutions, managers, family offices and foundations as well as start up and long-standing businesses. Umar is adjunct faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Law, Michigan State Law School, and Boston Islamic Seminary. He teaches courses in Islamic law, business ethics, Islamic finance and investment, and halal food. He is author of the book, A Socially Responsible Islamic Finance: Character and the Common Good (Palgrave-MacMillan, 2017) and has spoken at numerous forums. Umar is only licensed to practice law in New York, Texas and Washington DC.
