Hi, Ümit is here! I am an entrepreneur and data scientist with a PhD in Astrophysics and 7 years of experience in data entry and mining, developing data processing pipelines, and interpreting scientific results. My early career began as a laboratory assistant at Istanbul University, where I was in charge of digitizing the archived observations of the Istanbul University Solar Observatory. Parallel to my part-time employment, I sought to create a telescope-making workshop within Istanbul's Astronomy department. After earning my Bachelor's degree, I highly desired to go abroad to widen my network and enhance my experience. For this, I worked with the University of Cologne to negotiate a bilateral agreement that enabled me to join Prof. Dr. P. Schilke's group as an Erasmus student. I was the first astronomy student at Istanbul University to participate in the Erasmus program and to obtain a national grant, namely the TÜBİTAK National Grants for Priority Fields (2210-C). During this research, I investigated the formation of massive stars by delving into a 30 GB large data set and utilizing a range of tools for data calibration, analysis, and visualization. In 2016, I got accepted for a paid internship in Leiden, The Netherlands, where I would use advanced astrochemistry models and compare the results to observations for 10 weeks. Following this internship, I accepted the full-time PhD program at the University of Groningen and the SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research. The next four years helped me evolve as a scientific researcher, negotiator, project and time manager, and data analyst. In 2021, I began working as a postdoctoral researcher at NASA, the organization of my dreams. I received a promotion to Associate Scientist just after a year on the job. As of right now, I am working as an associate scientist at NASA's SOFIA Science Center in Mountain View, California. There are two primary objectives for me to accomplish. To begin, I use state-of-the-art data collected by the SOFIA Legacy Program FEEDBACK team. This consortium has millions of spectra to conduct scientific research on the evolution of our Galaxy. Secondly, I am a member of a group responsible for processing data obtained by the SOFIA observatory. In addition to my scientific adventures, I started a software development company (Hezarfen LLC) with four other developers who are passionate about their fields. Nowadays, we're developing a platform we're calling Redditus (Rent in Latin).Feel free to connect via LinkedIn or contact me directly at umit@umitkavak.com.

Massive stars, with a mass more than 8 Solar-masses, have a strong destructive impact on the clouds of gas and dust where they are born. My thesis examines the formation of massive stars and their impact on the surrounding gas environment. I use observations with a ground-based radio telescope, a space-based infrared telescope, and an infrared telescope.
