As of the 21st October 2020 I became the Chief Executive of IPSA (International Professional Security Association) the longest established security trade association in the UK. Consequently, I am now updating my LinkedIn profile. Instead of writing about my industry achievements on this occasion, I want to bring your attention to a very important day, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). This awareness campaign is annually observed on 3rd December each year to promote the full and equal participation of people with disabilities. This subject is very special to me. I am registered disabled - Blind. It happened five years ago (although it seems like yesterday) and it devastated my life… but time helps heal most things.IPSA now have a blind Chief Executive… will you judge them for it? How would it make you feel if I rock-up to a meeting with a white stick? Would you be embarrassed…?How would you react to someone who can’t even find the door? These are the questions I asked myself at the start. It did not take me long to recognise that people soon forget their first impression. If you are good at your work, that is what is important.I will of course change this narrative after December and update my profile for real. But in the meantime, I would like you to consider your diversity and disabled policy as not just being a compliant document in a suite of policy statements… but as a living document. Make a difference like IPSA by employing or helping to develop a person with a disability… it is a reminder that comes around once a year in December… the season of goodwill to all.
