We wanted to deliver a pretty big technological improvement. The developers, myself included, put a lot of work into it. There was a massive problem with communication. The team was stuck in politics, and no one understood how dire the situation was above the team. I was called into a team meeting and told the project was scraped, and the team would be reassigned. I wasn't convinced that those above were aware of the project's status. They were relying on SCRUM to communicate the status up through the chain of command. I reached out to Phil under the open door policy. Explained my situation and merely asked for one hour to demo with him and another VP personally. He granted it. We ran over two hours. The project was promptly reinstated. It was agreed that cancellation was a mistake. My take away from this is Phil is willing to change directions and listen. In another case, this time when Phil was CTO, I knew I had a solid reference for a front-end engineer. Phil said to me on multiple times he would do anything to empower me to help make more referrals. I had already made five referrals at the time. I told him I had a potential applicant that I couldn't get to budge, but if he helped show that we as a company cared, I believed I could get her to send in an application. Despite being very busy, he told me to schedule any available time with his secretary. I did. However unorthodox, I orchestrated an unrehearsed 20 minute phone call with a potential applicant and the CTO. She left that conversation feeling important, and appreciated. She had her application in the next day. Take away, Phil doesn't let the title go to his head. He understands the value we can all provide and will do what needs to be done.
