I trained for over two years in a Zen Monastery underneath two of the most respected Zen Masters in the United States. I woke up every day at 3:50 am sat meditation for 2 hours, at a silent formal Japanese meal, worked in silence most of the day, meditated for 2 hours in the evening, and went to bed on a straw mat every night. One week out of every four I sat a silent intensive retreat that involved 8 - 12 hours of sitting, daily interview with a Zen Master, and abstaining from writing reading and making eye contact. For over a year I was the Jisha or head attendant to one of the Zen Masters a position of great honor in the monastery. Working so closely with this wise teach taught me a lot about what it takes to lead others and the kind of support powerful people truly need in order to thrive.More than any other experience of my life this taught me the power of deep discipline, true silence, and gave me a road map to the inner workings of the mind and heart.

I ran one of the coolest and hippest venues in all of Portland. I learned what it takes to keep a small and passionate business going. I worked with a variety of successful artists, their managers, and teams. During my time there I helped create a culture of trust and passion amongst the employees. I fought against bad leadership and I stood up for the music that was at the center of all of our lives.

For over two years I lived and worked on the road with Rock Stars. I saw the challenges of fame and the costs of it. I saw how lonely it can be in the spot light, and how hard it can be to get the honest feedback you need to grow as a person. I saw what happens when you believe your own hype and buy into your own PR campaign. I saw what it takes to rise above all of that and create brilliant work over and over again.
