Uno Lai is a celebrated lighting designer and lighting artist. A native of Taiwan, Mr. Lai traveled extensively during his early career. For the purposes of exposure to a broad spectrum of professional training – including photography, theatre and interior design – he lived in a number of countries across the globe and accumulated a wide array of creative influences, all of which embraced and nurtured his artistic spirit. In 2005, Mr. Lai focused his energy and expertise as a lighting designer, fulfilling his vision to establish Unolai Lighting Design (ULDA). With offices in Shanghai and Taiwan, ULDA has since established itself as one of the foremost lighting design companies in the region. The ULDA portfolio includes the Taipei 101 skyscraper and Shanghai XinTianDi, along with extensive hospitality projects for Hyatt, Starwood, and IHG.In the media, Uno Lai has been praised for his imaginative lighting design work and is often described as a “lighting poet”. He believes that lighting involves more than vision – the experience of light is a sensation. He was an early proponent of “subtractive lighting design,” recognizing that removing light can be equally important as adding it. Mr. Lai has been honored to receive a variety of awards in the lighting design industry, including from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the International Association of Lighting Designers. Uno Lai strives continually to reimagine the future of lighting. A sought-after public speaker, Mr. Lai enjoys sharing his passion for light with audiences, in addition to expressing his creative expertise through works and publications. In recent years, he has initiated large-scale lighting art installations based on these concepts, and has been invited to participate in international lighting festivals and exhibitions including the Singapore Marina Bay Lighting Festival, Taipei Hua-Shan Creative Park, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai.
