Films viewed are from Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, Latin America, and South America.VM131 Approaches to Media StudiesDevelops students’ critical thinking and writing skills in visual and media arts. Students learn to analyze visual and media art from formal and contextual perspectives and articulate relational connections across cultures and disciplines. Work in this course helps students identify and critique structural power imbalances, and hegemonic cultural values and media practices.

Learning to Think, Thinking to Learn is part of the Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project and aims to develop the ability of students at Mandela International Magnet School in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as thinkers and learners. To accomplish this, the project draws on the extensive research of Project Zero related to thinking, learning, and teaching for understanding. This includes promoting thinking through the use of “thinking routines” and by helping teachers establish a classroom culture that supports thinking. The project provides a unique forum for the further development and refinement of these approaches by combining them at a new school and tracking students' development over time. Cinematic Migrations, Fall 2015"What do the words “cinematic” and “migration” evoke? How might “cinematic” be defined and how might “migration” be defined? What does the conjunction evoke and how can these be thought in relation to each other? What does the porosity of the term “Cinematic Migrations” invite? Cinema can now be thought in the present as the umbrella term used for the variety of moving image and time-based forms that currently circulate and which have intersecting, yet specific, histories of emergence. The course explores how cinema has been transformed by a combination of operations, including the “production of subjectivity,” contextual and theoretical shifts, in addition to the many changing formats and forms of diffusion, including online video and television, spatial installations, performance, dance, and an expanding range of portable recording and viewing devices. Recurring questions will be: “What is generated?” “What is evocative?” and “How do we care?”"Public Art/Public Sphere, Spring 2015"Focuses on the production of art for public space and conceptually deals with new modes of public art that shift the discussion on public space toward discourse on the environment by unpacking, reevaluating, and recombining the notion of the Anthropocene. The subject will be organized around research and design on a recently decommissioned United States Naval Air Station in Iceland. From the perspective of both crisis and possibility, the class will consider attempts to develop sustainable culture, environment, and enterprise in a post-NATO and post- economic meltdown environment.
