About Ursula V Staubli

I am an accomplished and forward-thinking neurobiologist with a long-standing passion for understanding the complex interplay between the brain and behavior. I have a well-established research/publication history in Cognitive Brain Function and Neurodegenerative Disease, including a successful track record as a team leader in both academia and industry. I have published over 70 research articles in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals and ten book chapters, and I was an invited speaker at over 40 national and international academic meetings and conferences. My fifteen years of experience as a pharmaceutical discovery scientist focused on restoring memory loss in dementia patients and improving visual function in diseases of the retina and eye. I am also a co-inventor on 9 patents.

Adjunct Faculty at Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at UC Irvine
Ursula V Staubli Work Experience Details
  • Allergan
Senior Research Investigator In Biological Sciences
    Allergan Jan 2006 - Oct 2014
    Irvine, Ca
    • Held a critical role in facilitating transition of drug discovery efforts from Ophthalmology into the Cognitive Neuroscience arena. • Coordinated and established new research capabilities comprising molecular, anatomical, electrophysiological and behavioral expertise, enabling efficient identification and characterization of novel small molecules for CNS targets. • Introduced new research strategies for rapid assessment of functional vision in translational models of glaucoma, macular degeneration and amblyopia. • Co-pioneered pre-clinical efforts leading to identification of uniquely new targets for vision enhancement and initiated study protocol for proof-of-concept clinical trial at the Southern California College of Optometry to evaluate first lead compound in adult patients with impaired vision. • Co-inventor on 8 Allergan patents.
  • Cortex Pharmaceuticals
    Vice President Of Biology
    Cortex Pharmaceuticals 1999 - 2004
    Irvine, Ca
    • Led the strategic planning and coordination of all biological research activities in behavioral pharmacology and electrophysiology with focus on implementing new research capabilities for rapid functional assessment of human memory in translational animal models.• Played a critical role in providing pre-clinical validation of memory enhancement by select positive allosteric AMPA receptor modulators (Ampakines™) for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders of the brain, resulting in two lead compounds that moved to the clinic for improvement of cognitive symptoms in Schizophrenia, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), respectively. • Additional compounds were out-licensed to pharmaceutical companies in Europe for treatment of cognitive dysfunction in Schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s Disease.
  • New York University
Associate Professor, Center For Neural Science
    New York University 1993 - 1999
    Nyu, New York City
    • Built independent neuroscience research program comprising electrophysiological, computational and behavioral expertise toward a deeper understanding of the cellular mechanisms underlying memories of different durations. • Discovered the covert ability of the serotonergic 5HT3 and GABAb system to enhance learning by strengthening the underlying brain machinery.• Established the importance of endogenous brain rhythms and neuronal firing patterns to predict whether or not a specific drug treatment will be effective in improving memory.• Our work on memory enhancement was recognized in the Wall Street Journal and also featured on two TV News shows involving Peter Jennings and Diane Sawyer, respectively.
  • Mcgill University
    Associate Professor, Department Of Psychology
    Mcgill University 1991 - 1993
    Mcgill University, Montreal
    • Successfully built independent neuroscience research laboratory to study neuronal mechanisms of plasticity and their contribution to short versus long-term memory.• Taught undergraduate courses in Physiological Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, including the training and mentoring of honors students in hands-on discovery research in the laboratory.• Successfully provided the first pre-clinical (“in vivo”) evidence for the enhancement of synaptic transmission in the awake brain by systemic allosteric AMPA receptor up-modulator, leading to an important publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in 1994.
  • Uc Irvine
Postdoctoral Fellow And Assistant Research Professor Step Iv
    Uc Irvine 1982 - 1990
Center For Neurobiology Of Learning And Memory, Uci, Irvine
    • Conducted postdoctoral research in laboratory of Professor Gary Lynch and directed multitudes of undergraduate students performing cutting-edge projects.• Pioneered rodent olfactory memory as a model for human data memory and was first to establish the duration of synapse specific long-term potentiation (LTP) in the behaving brain. • Played key role in creating Ampakine™ memory enhancement program after accidentally uncovering a key interactive mechanism between classic nootropic drugs and excitatory synaptic transmission essential for enhanced brain communication.
