As a faculty member and three-time department chair, I took an active lead in moving the CS program from a traditional 1980s curriculum that fed students into a single local military contractor, to one that received recognition from the National Science Foundation and Microsoft for its cutting-edge course offerings. Also, this program placed students in professions ranging from web startups to intellectual property law, as well as top-tier graduate programs in computer science, business, and computational biology.I designed over a dozen courses in the computer science curriculum, and have taught every course in the 'canon' except Operating Systems.I am the primary author of more than 100 publications and presentations on computer science education, including one of the first Java textbooks. My work is included in, and I edited, the National Academies Workshop Report on 'Computational Thinking for Everyone'. I have been building software at both the research and production level since 1980. I code fluently in Java, C, HTML5/Javascript, and PHP on a variety of platforms including Android and iOS. My Lisp, Scheme, Actionscript, as well as a many esoteric old languages is a bit rusty.I founded the Interactive Multimedia program in 2003 - one of the first such undergraduate media programs - and designed the course structure of the major, with special emphasis on the computing core. In this program I very successfully taught 'right brain' people to code, and inspired them to appreciate the beauty of coding and go on to the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU.
