Usman Aslam is an aspiring academic surgeon who has earned strong professional research experiences in a wide spectrum of disease-prevention fields. He is a recent MPH graduate from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the first and highest-ranked public health school in the United States, where his research focused on utilizing big data to identify reversible risk factors for recurrent traumatic injury (including firearm-related and non-accidental traumas) in children. Usman’s most recent fieldwork project was a collaborative and comprehensive preventive-medicine needs assessment of the Syrian American Medical Society’s medical clinic at al-Zaatari, the world’s largest Syrian refugee settlement with over 80,000 inhabitants. His work was generously funded by a 2018 Edward Giuliano Global Fellowship and grant from the Center for Humanitarian Health at the Bloomberg School. As a full voting member of the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates (elected by popular vote), Usman represents the health policy interests of all medical students from institutions in the 6 New England states and New York. In addition to engaging in meaningful policy work, he actively volunteers at the NYIT Community Free Clinic, an entirely student-run free adult healthcare clinic serving uninsured Long-Islanders. Usman co-founded this clinic with his peers in 2015 and sits on its executive steering committee.
