Utkarsh Sharma Email and Phone Number
I am Utkarsh Sharma, a graduate student at North Carolina State University, pursuing my MS in Computer Science with a Master's Thesis on the applications of AI and ML in cellular networks (5G onwards). I have a solid foundation in computer engineering from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, where I graduated in 2022.I have over a year of experience as an Associate Software Developer at Oracle, where I implemented enhancements and new features to our product in a UI engineering role, using web development technologies like JavaScript and Oracle-JET. I also performed the automation of our UI pages using Selenium. Before this, I had worked as a Product Development Intern at Oracle for seven months, gaining exposure to various aspects of software development lifecycle. My passion for data science and generative AI has driven me to further develop my skills through relevant coursework and research projects. I am currently working as a Research Assistant at NC State University, where I am reviewing existing literature on network slicing and open RAN architecture, and designing and developing a safe and reliable learning algorithm for resource allocation in open RANs, under the supervision of Dr. Liu. I have also completed several certifications related to data science and AI, such as Data Science Foundations: Fundamentals, Career Essentials in Generative AI, and Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, issued by LinkedIn Learn and Microsoft.I have researched ways to mitigate the performance degradation on classification of the out-of-distribution (OOD) data when a deep neural net is compressed using Pruning or Distillation.I also have expertise in various machine learning techniques such as regression, classification, and clustering algorithms, as well as NLP techniques like sentiment analysis, vectorization, POS tagging, lemmatization, stemming, and topic modeling. I have also extensively explored OpenCV, Image Processing, Object Detection techniques, and various Deep Learning Algorithms, such as Generative AI, DNN, and RNN. I am proficient in programming languages such as C/C++, Python, and R, enabling me to approach problems from different angles and choose the most effective solutions.I firmly believe in the power of teamwork and effective communication to drive successful outcomes. I am always eager to learn new things and challenge myself, and I aspire to become a Data Scientist and an ML/AI expert in the future. Let's connect!

Graduate Research AssistantNorth Carolina State University Sep 2023 - PresentRaleigh, North Carolina, United StatesMy thesis involves analyzing current traffic steering approaches in telecommunication networks, identifying critical gaps in reliability and performance, especially under high-load conditions. I developed a reinforcement learning algorithm that optimizes load balancing and user satisfaction in dynamic networks, reducing unmanaged UEs to under 2%. The algorithm integrates safety and reliability protocols to ensure robust performance during disruptions like traffic surges or equipment failures. By efficiently allocating resources based on latency, coverage, and capacity, the algorithm supports 5G and onwards models' needs, and its validation in simulations demonstrated significant improvements in load distribution and user experience. -
Machine Learning EngineerFreedm Systems Center Feb 2024 - Aug 2024Raleigh, North Carolina, United StatesAt the FREEDM Research Center, NC State, I developed a machine learning algorithm using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to estimate critical state variables, such as bus voltages and phase angles, in distributed energy systems with a mean error below 2%. The real-time state estimation model utilized low-cost bolt-on sensors, enhancing visibility of Behind-the-Meter (BTM) photovoltaic (PV) systems and Distributed Energy Resources (DER), significantly improving accuracy. In another project, published in IECON 2024, I developed a physics-informed neural network to predict junction temperatures of power devices in PV-based DC microgrids with ±10°C accuracy, reducing sensor dependency and optimizing device lifespan. Both models demonstrated robustness, scalability, and cost-effectiveness in real-world scenarios, contributing to grid edge visibility and renewable energy integration. -
Associate Software DeveloperOracle Aug 2022 - Aug 2023Bengaluru, Karnataka, IndiaAs an Associate Software Developer at Oracle, I led the migration of several of the DCS team's components to V-DOM architecture, boosting efficiency by rendering certain page elements up to 2 times faster. I also crafted Selenium-driven page objects and tests, ensuring seamless UI interactions, and contributed to enhancing over 15 critical UI elements in Clinical-One, fortifying its UX and market competitiveness. -
Product Development InternOracle Jan 2022 - Jul 2022Bengaluru, Karnataka, IndiaAs a Product Development Intern at Oracle, I automated content scraping, reducing manual efforts by 20%. I collaborated with stakeholders to translate requirements into technical specifications for UI development and applied best practices and design patterns to elevate code quality, readability, and maintainability. -
Deep Learning EngineerMinus Zero Dec 2020 - May 2021Patiala, Punjab, IndiaAs a Deep Learning Engineer at Minus Zero, worked with the Perceptron team in implementing object detection and distance calculation techniques, enhancing road safety. Directed road region detections and instance segmentation for accurately identifying and segmenting moving objects in the vehicle's path. -
Data Science InternFurtados School Of Music Feb 2021 - Apr 2021Maharashtra, IndiaAs a Data Science Intern at Furtados School of Music, I processed lecture data, transcribed audio files using G-Cloud Speech-to-text API, and applied NLP techniques such as n-gram analysis, TF-IDF vectorization, and POS-tagging. Leveraging BERT models, I developed an intelligent Q&A chatbot achieving close to 90% accuracy in its suggestions. -
Machine Learning InternFoxmula - The Smart Way Jan 2019 - Mar 2019IndiaDuring my Machine Learning Internship at Foxmula, I delved into Python and machine learning essentials. The curriculum covered data science fundamentals, statistical inference, and hands-on Python training for data analysis and visualization. Additionally, I gained insights into various machine learning techniques, culminating in a project where I applied regression models to a real-world game dataset where based on the formulation of a multi-variate problem, the win percentage was to be predicted.
