The Hastings Center, a nonpartisan, nonprofit bioethics think tank was established in 1969 and is the oldest independent, nonpartisan, interdisciplinary research institute of its kind in the world. Created from multiple disciplines, including philosophy, law, political science, and education the Center currently focuses on four broad areas where the national and global community face serious challenges. Specifically, the human life span, health and health care, science & technology, and the environment.The Hastings Center and its scholars produce publications on ethical issues in health, science, and technology that inform policy, practice, and public understanding. My specific area of inquiry focuses on protecting the autonomy of persons living with serious mental illness using psychiatric advance directives. I use the tools of social science to recognize and respond to ethical issues in health and health care as public issues rather than personal troubles. To that end, as a public sociologist, my scholarship seeks to “engage multiple publics in multiple ways.” Thus I work to respond to health and health care inequity at the individual, community, and institutional level.

The SMDEP program is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant awarded to 12 colleges/university's around the country. The mission of the Howard University SMDEP is "to provide an educational experience of exceptional quality that will strengthen the overall academic preparation of underrepresented minority, disadvantaged, and low-income students who express interest in admission to medical or dental school."During the Health Disparities and Ethical Reasoning session, students are introduced to ethical reasoning, principlism, and issues in health disparities where they consider the biological versus social construction of race and the disparities which arise in this context. During the 2nd session on Health Policy, students are introduced to policy making and health policy analysis. Students discuss and identify a variety of policy issues, and are required to research and write a letter to the appropriate legislative representative advocating action on the issue.
