“Not all heroes wear capes” – a phrase we all became familiar with as the Pandemic raged on and I knew it to be true of my nurse clients long before. Now I’m on a mission to help prepare, encourage, and empower the amazing humans I work with to feel financially secure. Over the last 9 years I’ve come to realize that the clients I work with give so much of themselves to their work that it leaves little time or energy to themselves, especially in terms of their finances. It leaves them feeling guilty, unsure, and eventually burnt-out.My approach to working with my nurse clients has been to first set a clear understanding that it’s ok not to know what you don’t know. Secondly, when it comes to creating a financial and investment plan I keep it simple and consistent. My process starts with a mutual discovery meeting where I get to understand who you are and what is important to you as well as ensure that I am a good fit for you and you for me. That is the basis of what I hope will be a life-long relationship of trust and growth. My process then takes you through different phases of analyzing your current situation, goal setting, and developing a plan. Often times these are the hardest steps for many of my clients as they face what they have probably been avoiding for a while on their own but working together makes facing their money insecurities a little less scary. The “ah ha” moments usually come when we establish an implementation plan – clear action items that we can tackle together – and how to prioritize these action items. When it comes to nurses, I’ve worked with all types: the ones who just got on the floor and need help getting their 403b started, the ones who go part-time for a while after starting a family, the educators, the charge nurses ready to retire! No nurse is created equal but I believe they’ve all felt at least at one time like they carry the weight of the world on their shoulders.
