Faramarz Valafar is a Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, and Joint Doctoral Programs in Epidemiology, Global Health, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Bioengineering at San Diego State University. He is the founding Director of the Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics Research Center and its associated graduate program.He is the Principal Investigator of the Laboratory for Pathogenesis of Clinical Drug Resistance and Persistence (http://tuberculosis.sdsu.edu/) His areas of expertise lie in Genomics, Epigenetics, and Systems Biology of Infectious Diseases (especially Tuberculosis), as well as in data mining and pattern recognition using deep learning, especially in life sciences. He has received several multi year grants from the National Institutes of Health for projects in his area of work (including a ten year grant from NIAID to study drug resistance in tuberculosis) , as well as contracts from the local industry both as a consultant and as a subcontractor.His recent work includes proteomic, (epi)genomic, transcriptomic, methylomic, functional genomics of genetic dark matter, and systems biological/medical data analysis (for drug target identification and design, and functional elucidation of novel genetic/proteomic products in drug resistant tuberculosis), cancer diagnosis, reconstruction of gene regulatory networks), prediction of effects of Hydroxyurea on sickle cell anemia patients, and automated structure determination of complex carbohydrates from their NMR and GC-EIMS spectra.

Principal InvestigatorSan Diego State University - Laboratory For Pathogenesis Of Clinical Drug Resistance And Persistence Jul 2013 - PresentThe Laboratory for Pathogenesis of Clinical Drug Resistance and Persistence (http://tuberculosis.sdsu.edu/) was created through funding from NIH in July 2013 to study the pathogenesis of genetic mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). In July 2018, we received funding through a competitive renewal process. This marks ten years of continuous funding for our core project by NIAID. The new funding expands the scope of the project to studying the genetic dark matter in M. tuberculosis, epigenetic effects through DNA methylation, and systems biology/medicine through metabolic and regulatory modeling.
