Founded in 1928, the National Child Research Center provides a collaborative approach to preschool education in an environment that nurtures the whole child, fosters partnerships with families and is committed to the inclusion of children with special needs. A highly trained, multi-disciplinary faculty employs developmentally appropriate practices, supported by ongoing professional development and sound research. Essential to its role as a model of early childhood education is the creation of a diverse, respectful community. Both within and beyond the school community, NCRC seeks opportunities to advocate for all children and their families.

During first year created positive faculty culture that resulted in the highest staff retention in 10 years. Created an environmental science program built on a partnership with Living Classrooms of D.C. and Discovery Creek Museum that incorporates shipboard and classroom experiences for all children. Partnered with MusicKids, Inc. to expand the music department to include violin for students as young as three. Successfully led school through AIMS accreditation process with full faculty and community participation. Initiated first time review of the school’s curriculum using curriculum mapping technology resulting in stronger curricular alignment across grades. Developed tighter budget controls that led to the school showing a significant profit in second year of leadership. Decreased student attrition from 40% to 22% in two years. Created a cutting edge and developmentally appropriate technology program featuring Smart products, Apple products and Lego Robotics. Instituted a professional development plan that trained all teachers in the use of new technology. Restructured business office to increase efficiency and maximize personnel.

Directed and taught in an independent parent owned school that serves 268 children between the ages of 2½ to 15 for more than 15 years and supervised 50 full time teachers and support staff. Accomplished curriculum development, building maintenance, monitoring and management of a $2.7 million budget, parent and school relations, recruitment and retention of qualified staff. Expanded the school by adding a new primary class, a new lower elementary class, a new upper elementary class and a middle school. Participated in expanding the school’s programs which resulted in a significant increase in revenue for the school. Developed a comprehensive admission process, initiated a primary music program, and increased retention from primary to elementary levels. Generated and facilitated a complete early identification and support program for students that need academic support. Created a teacher intern program and implemented an interactive computer program (OWL) that has a global issues component. Established a very successful world language program in Spanish, Arabic and French. Acquired and integrated a weather station into the current curriculum to expand our focus on environmental education and global citizenship. Developed and generated the first Annual Report that allowed Henson Valley, to be part of the Combined Federal Campaign. Oversaw and maintained the school’s $2 million capitol campaign while working with the Board of Trustees in planning and implementing a move in 2007 to a 15 acre campus
