About Valarie Brandywine
I began my nonprofit career as a freelancer in 2019, assisting with local, state, foundation, and corporate grant writing for eight nonprofit clients. Then in early 2023, I moved to the Twin Cities and began working for Rainbow Health, a nonprofit dedicated to serving the health needs of the LGBTQ+ and HIV affected communities. I have learned so much about Minnesota and its amazing nonprofit community in the past year! In all, I have earned nearly $4 million for nonprofit organizations fighting for human services and social justice.While grant writing complements my Bachelor's in English and love of written communication, I have been equally called to the data that informed the needs assessments, logic models, and funding histories on which my clients' grant narratives depend. I found that data storytelling is at the heart of grants management, and I love exploring how organizations' research and data can inform narratives that touch the hearts of prospective funders. Beyond writing, my career in nonprofit work has allowed me to combine my love of communications, spreadsheets, and creating good in the world. I love helping organizations translate their data and vision into compelling, persuasive narratives for funders. I am also an advocate for equitable, inclusive, and intersectional care within individual nonprofits and within the nonprofit industry at large; I am a huge proponent of trust-based philanthropy, and helped renew the DEI committee within Rainbow Health's union in 2024.
