About Valentin Hamard

Currently a PhD student in Roman history, and more specifically in the history of Late Antique Christianity, my work involves studying the mission of the bishop of Rome during Late Antiquity using the concept of geo-ecclesiology, which consists of studying, at different scales, the strategic objectives formed by ecclesiastical protagonists according to the spatial priorities of their agenda. This concept will be applied to a source of exceptional interest in the history of Late Antique Christianity: the Collectio Avellana. This canonical collection from the second half of the sixth century comprises 244 documents, mostly papal letters and imperial acts. These documents span the period from the schism of Ursinus under the pontificate of Damasus (367) to the first Constitutum of Vigilus (553), and provide extensive documentation on papal correspondence and the ecclesiastical policy pursued by the episcopal see in its interaction with the court of Constantinople and other key ecclesiastical players. The subject also challenges our understanding of the end of the Western Roman Empire, the affirmation of the see of Rome and its relationship with the other sees of the Empire and, more generally, with the Eastern Roman Empire. This is why, using the concept of geo-ecclesiology, my thesis will identify the characteristic features of the mission that the popes set themselves between 367 and 553, on the basis of documents selected from the Collectio Avellana, in the face of the challenges presented in particular by the reign of Justinian (527-565).
