To most people, my work amounts to an enjoyable hour of television, but what's on the screen is the tip of an iceberg. The shows I make are audience levers, used by networks to increase advertising revenues, and by advertisers to increase sales. Everything depends on me producing an audience-winning show, assisted by the team I build and the brilliant execution of the tasks I set for them.My work starts in the world of ideas a year before broadcasting. I intercept television creatives worldwide and check out show formats. I find a winner and “sell” it to top management. I handle broadcast rights and format localization. I reckon and tally the material and human resources needed for the launch and over the life of the show. I check compliance with protocols and legalities, notably intellectual property. A deal is then negotiated for network televising. All lights green, I devise a multi-threaded work plan, subject to budget, runtimes and deadlines. I coordinate with the network broadcaster, studio suppliers and specialist figures, and oversee casting for show contestants and audience participants. Voilà. The tip of the iceberg is ready for viewing.Am I job hunting? You bet. I need to keep achieving, but the outlook for the broadcast segment I work in is unconvincing. Viewership increases driven by covid are dubious. Disruptive ICT is a another factor, with sectors like banking, publishing, shopping and travel turned upside down. There is an unstoppable rollover of generations and tastes bearing down on showtime formats. The time to migrate my abilities is now.
