Valère Meus graduated from Ghent University (UGent, Belgium) as a linguist in English and Dutch. He started his career at the Department of English Linguistics there. He was instrumental in founding the Language Centre at UGent (1981) and was its Director for 21 years. In the meantime he obtained an ICT programmer's diploma (adult education) and developed software for the Language Centre while lerading it. Afterwards he acted as educational expert for Ghent University Association before being appointed the Head of the International Relations Office at UGent. He remained Head for 6 years, and ended his university career as an international relations expert. He retired from Ghent University in 2017. He was involved in many European educational projects and already coordinated an Erasmus ICP for the less widely taught European languages as early as 1991. He was active both as coordinator and participant in Tempus projects in Russia, Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans (e.g. Basileus) and later in Erasmus Mundus Action 2 projects for China, the Western Balkans and South-East Asia. He was also active in the development of software and multimedia interactive learning materials. More recently he coordinated the Erasmus+ Egracons project (European Grade Conversion System - www.egracons.eu -, which led to the Egracons Tool). His interest in student data portability has made him one of the driving forces in the Erasmus without Paper consortium which is setting up a European digital network for the exchange of student mobility data (www.erasmuswithoutpaper.eu). He is now a member of the EWP+ management team as programme manager (Framework Contract as part of the EU's European Student Card Initiative (ESCI)). Since February 2024 he is less involved in day-to-day operations, but his position is still the same He was also active in SGroup - Universities in Europe (where he acted as Operations Manager from 2017 till 1 Jan 2022) and was a Board member of the Groningen Declaration Network. He is also an expert in the culture and language of the Low Countries (Belgium and the Netherlands), and for many years organized the Low Countries Studies acculturation series at UGent.
