My decision to pursue a career in healthcare was driven by my personal experience, being a healthcare recipient not a healthcare provider, shaped my conviction that nursing is the pathway to take going forward. Overcoming the language barrier, I started making a difference in people’s lives, first working as a caregiver, then a CNA, a LPN and, finally, a RN. I started my journey from the bottom up, learning along the way not only what nursing stands for but also how gratifying it is to be able to say at the end of a work day: “today I made a difference in a person’s life.” My drive to succeed combined with the compassion I have for my fellow human beings gave me the motivation necessary to become a nurse. My healthcare career is diverse including, but not limited to: assisting with direct care as a caregiver/CNA, helping restore people’s health after surgeries working in a Rehab Unit as a LPN, preventing hospitalizations and empowering my patients through education while working as a Home Health nurse, and, last but not least, providing comfort at end of life working as a Hospice nurse. I do believe that for as long as one lives, the learning process continues. With this in mind, I am prepared to persist in my effort to advance my education. The first step I envision is earning my bachelor degree in nursing. Once this task will be accomplished, I see myself pursuing one of these two options: become a Nurse Practitioner with a psychiatric expertise or become a community liaison RN promoting Hospice. These two options are so different and yet similar at the same time. In today’s environment, both end of life and psychiatric diseases are stigmatized .They are both feared and not well understood. They both require compassion and care. I strongly feel that I could make a difference in people’s life regardless of which of these two paths I will choose. Having decided on the trajectory of my career, I chose Ottawa University as the conduit in achieving my goal.
