Students need to feel included, capable, and inspired to grow. The most important skills an educator can have are those which they utilize to foster these feelings in their students.The developed skills I most enjoy using to create a sense of belonging are mentorship, intuition, facilitation, emotion management, and motivating others. One student wrote, "I often dreaded going to school each morning, but I knew if I held out until I had Ms. I’s class there would be a space for me where my feelings and experiences were valued."As a coach and former athlete, experience has taught me that you work harder for people you like- even if it's towards a goal you don’t believe you can achieve. If you respect them, you're even more likely to believe their belief in you, and rise to the level of their expectations- not just your own.The most impactful natural abilities I use to inspire action and influence growth are my high energy, positive and humorous personality, and an equal measure of empathy to every ounce of push.My recent tenure at Sterne School in San Francisco afforded me the opportunity for further professional development in the area of Social and Emotional Learning.
