Hospitalist Physician, Associate Professor with Tenure, Bertram H. and Janet M. Schaap Presidential Endowed Chair, and the Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. My research focuses on improving the safety of hospitalized patients with common infections, particularly pneumonia and urinary tract infection. To do so, I focus on combating diagnostic error and overuse, particularly antibiotic overuse at transitions of care. As a practicing hospitalist, Dr. Vaughn works to understand the role hospitalists play in diagnostic error and inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. As Director of Hospital Medicine research at the University of Utah, Dr. Vaughn runs the Utah Quality Advancement Laboratory (UQuAL) which includes a research and quality mentorship program, UQuAL Scholars, and the UQuAL Hospitalist team—an innovative patient safety learning laboratory.
