I work as a mentor, where I guide and help students who are applying for their PhD in mathematics. Project Short is absolutely free and we guide students through the entire application process including personal statement feedback as well as mock interviews. The goal is to increase diversity and accessibility to all when going through this process. Project Short also provides services to other STEM and Humanities fields.

During my time at American Express I had the opportunity to work in the Internal Audit Department subdivision of Global Risk. The role given to me was extremely hands-on, and threw me directly into the world of auditing. I worked on several real-time projects during my tenure, and participated in multiple meetings with high-level senior management. Trusted to work independently on projects dealing with sensitive information that impacted the company. I created, edited, and summarized extensive Powerpoint and Excel documents. Continuously staying up to date with news and information that dealt with the business and internal practices of the company. Tenaciously ensuring every fine detail in each document given, and writing up the meeting minutes of each internal and external walkthrough. Working in collaboration with others to produce adequate and timely work.

This 5 month internship took place in Albany. NY where I was placed in the office of Assemblywoman Annette M. Robinson of the 56th district. During my tenure there I was responsible for conducting research, and writing a one-page summary of my viewpoints in regards to on-going issues throughout New York City and State such as Universal Pre-K, Healthcare, and the DREAM Act. This information was used in order to aid in drafting new bill legislation. I also had the pleasure in meeting with constituents, lobbyist, and interest groups to listen and report back their opinion to the assemblywoman. There were also meetings with major banks such as J.P. Morgan Chase in order to discuss new legislation that effected the banking community. I also had many office duties which included drafting memos, faxing signatures for co-sponsorship of bills, and creating excel worksheets to better organize the union and community boards contact information. I also had a first hand look at the state budget and the demands that are required in order for it to be passed on time. I also participated in a mock session, where my office skills and outside research came to the limelight. I had to assume the role of my assembly person and hold a committee meeting, vote and sponsor bills, and finally debate and defend my bills. This job required many skills such as teamwork, leadership, and being able to be as transparent as possible to create a functional work environment.

I tutored young students in Mathematics and development of incremental quantitative skills, i.e; to understand numbers, to analyze uncertainty, to comprehend the properties of shapes and dimension, and to calculate how things change over time. Lastly I trained a recent hire on company policies and ensured quality control.
