Before I volunteered to substitute in a JNROTC unit for a year, I was a much sought-after sub, showing both value-added to teacher’s lesson plans, a broad and extensive repertoire of knowledge in a variety of academic subjects, and rapport with students. I showed compassion and understanding of student problems and learning issues as well. I was able to help them and challenge them. I taught summer school—conducting classes in general math, algebra, and U.S. history during which time I developed and executed a simulation on the Great Depression, replicating most of the economic issues present during the real depression. I wrote numerous lesson plans, syllabi, reports, and analyses.I substituted in the NJRTOC for one year, then was invited back for a second year. I noticed and corrected deficiencies in the Navy-authored materials, taught upper class students in a variety of disciplines, developed a physical fitness/health studies proposal for academic credit and mentored students helping to maintain the high success rate of the program. During one inspection, the regional NJROTC commander said that he wanted me back, however by law, I could only serve actively until a new Naval officer was hired. My time with Elk Grove includes time I was on the rolls, but did not get to sub whilst I was a Boy Scout District Executive.
