Education ProfessionalElk Grove Unified School District Jan 2002 - Aug 2010Elk Grove, CaBefore I volunteered to substitute in a JNROTC unit for a year, I was a much sought-after sub, showing both value-added to teacher’s lesson plans, a broad and extensive repertoire of knowledge in a variety of academic subjects, and rapport with students. I showed compassion and understanding of student problems and learning issues as well. I was able to help them and challenge them. I taught summer school—conducting classes in general math, algebra, and U.S. history during which time I developed and executed a simulation on the Great Depression, replicating most of the economic issues present during the real depression. I wrote numerous lesson plans, syllabi, reports, and analyses.I substituted in the NJRTOC for one year, then was invited back for a second year. I noticed and corrected deficiencies in the Navy-authored materials, taught upper class students in a variety of disciplines, developed a physical fitness/health studies proposal for academic credit and mentored students helping to maintain the high success rate of the program. During one inspection, the regional NJROTC commander said that he wanted me back, however by law, I could only serve actively until a new Naval officer was hired. My time with Elk Grove includes time I was on the rolls, but did not get to sub whilst I was a Boy Scout District Executive.

Information Systems Staff OfficerUnited States Air Force Oct 1976 - Oct 1996I worked at various IT capacities in several units during my Air Force service. I invested hours of my own time and attended two Air Force schools including the Air Force Institute of Technology to catch up on the IT technology and understand the systems I maintained. I co-authored research computer specifications with Lincoln Labs and other organizations in and around Boston, Massachusetts. I learned the ARPANET system—I took the USAF technical writing course. I transferred to a “joint service” organization where I developed a microcomputer spec and built a system for a 500+ person organization; I planned and conducted quarterly training workshops for everyone in another organization, and documented all its critical headquarters support processes. Then I went to a mid-America installation guiding and mentoring my commander & staff toward to fielding all tactical plans in a major organization, and developing work role & responsibility matrices for the entire unit, also securing funding for 400 computers in a 3rd unit. At a USAF major command headquarters, I enhanced control and operation of 7 mainframe computers supporting the two major commands there, streamlining tracking of $2.6 million of annual software requirements. I directed transition of the major command’s computer systems from prototype to operational status, and resolved a data transfer issue that threatened to jeopardize a contractor software package running on those computers. I published local area network implementation plans, too.My last major Air Force tasks were deploying several total quality management tasks, preparing my unit for its first Baldrich inspections, conducting unit training, and authoring written procedures, measurement tools, and directions for doing inspections and maintaining compliance to quality standards. Meanwhile, I helped prototype the conversion of paper records into electronic formats. I spent 1/3 of my Air Force career in co-author or authorship roles.
