"Don't Fence Me In," the classic cowboy song , describes the life style of cowboy/physician Van Mask, MD. He'll answer to doctor, doc, professor, captain, colonel, skipper, or boss- but he prefers to just be called cowboy. His Texas roots go back to 1824. One ancestor led the initial charge at San Jacinto, and is credited with coining the battle cry "Remember the Alamo!" Another was trail boss for the King Ranch and once took 5,600 head of longhorns all the way to Montana. Captain Mask was with initial charge of US Marines in Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 767 through the "Elbow" into Kuwait to liberate that country from Saddam Husein's invasion during the first Persian Gulf War. He was present for the return of the Royal Family to their homeland. He was called to active duty again after 9-1-1 for two years. Back at home Cowboy Mask had a herd of prize Texas Longhorn Cattle. Several were given to the City of Fort Worth to be used in their daily cattle drives in The Stockyards District. One was a giant steer named Walter, who was featured on CBS News in a news story titled "Everything is Bigger in Texas." Although Walter has gone to greener pastures , he still holds the title of being The Fort Worth Herd's largest steer. Cowboy Mask now rides a beautiful paint horse named Happy Jack in The Big Bend of Texas, Palo Duro Canyon, The Grand Grand Canyon, Guadalupe Mountains in Texas, The Sierra Nevadas of California, and much of New Mexico and Colorado. Tagging along packing the feed and gear is his favorite mule, Jeptha. He has several other horses and mules in training.As a locum tenens emergency medicine physician, Dr Mask has logged over 50,000 hours in Emergency Departments from Maine to Hawaii. He has served as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and has been featured twice in articles related to Emergency Medicine in "Texas Medicine," the monthly journal of the Texas Medical Association.
