Combating Sex Trafficking

Took a year out to move to Kolkata, India, and volunteer with International Justice Mission for a cause close to my heart - the protection of women and children from violence. I assisted prosecutors in their cases against human traffickers by reviewing evidence, drafting legal submissions, and assisting in opposing bail applications by accused persons (who invariably, when released on bail, would abscond and continue their trafficking activities). I co-organized and led training sessions for prosecutors and volunteer lawyers on victim sensitivity and witness preparation. I assisted in the production of an SOP for magistrates, police and prosecutors to use in sex trafficking cases.

Trial Specialist

In the course of 1 year, I was helicoptered into 3 trials (including a multi-million dollar arbitration against a State government), each at the door step of trial. I managed to achieve mastery of facts and documents within weeks, supported lead counsel as well as examined witnesses, and drafted all closing arguments. We won all 3 cases, to the satisfaction of our clients.

Training Ground

These were my training years: 6 years in Drew & Napier LLC, top-tier dispute resolution firm, mostly under the tutelage of eminent Senior Counsel. I second-chaired at High Court trials and Court of Appeal hearings, drafted trial and appeal submissions, assisted in a LASCO (Legal Assistance Scheme for Capital Offences) case, argued numerous interlocutory applications, successfully mediated a multi-million dollar settlement in a personal injury case that left our client a quadriplegic, and advised and held-held clients through white collar crime investigations (both internal and external).
