As a port operations coordinator in the clearing department I was a contact person for shipowners, their vessels, the terminal and other parties. My daily tasks included coordinating the unloading and loading processes, managing the equipment, applying for official permits and accounting for the costs incurred in port. Arrangements for the owner, such as repairs and crew change, were of course also on the agenda. The support and clearing of other ships around the Weser was also one of my regular activities, as was the calculation of port costs.

As as supervisor in the freight department of the ro-pax route between Germany and Lithuania I was contuining the work I got to know in the previous two and half a years. My work included customer service, booking space on board the vessel as well as preparation of the ship's arrival and departure. Furthermore, I was monitoring the discharging and loading process which I found to be the most interesting part of my job. During the time I spent at DFDS I learned a lot about the huge variety of cargo types and communication with people of various cultural backgrounds with its different needs.

The apprenticeship was structured in 2 parts. During the 2,5 years, I worked full time for DFDS. I was released from work for 12 weeks in order to learn in-depth knowledge of shipping and related logistics at vocational school.I mainly worked in the freight department of the ro-pax route between Germany and Lithuania.At the Check-In, I was responsible for checking in truck drivers with their trucks, truck-trailers and other types of vehicles.Furthermore, I was responsible for the departure Kiel-Klaipeda. Checking in unaccompanied units, communicating and planing together with the cargo mate and the stevedores' foreman were my main tasks as well as providing great customer service.I had a close and frequent communication with customers of various nationalities during the loading process to ensure suitable solutions if any problems occurred.I also worked in the booking department, where I booked space on our vessel for our customers.My goal was always to ensure the best service for our customers which I found to be enjoyable.In the freight department, I also worked at the cargo reception. There, I wrote orders to the stevedores providing information of how to unload the machines, containers, pallets or other cargo in compliance with the customers' needs.During my apprenticeship, I worked some time in the passenger department: I booked cabines and food on board for them, gave them their tickets and answered their questions about their voyage. I also had a short visit to the Sales and Marketing department: I wrote quotations and calculated how to stuff cargo on mafis.The most fulfilling part about this apprenticeship was for sure the combination of working in the office and also outside at the terminal. The contact with people and cargo, who in theory were already part of our planning, led to the great opportunity to understand the bigger picture. That was very helpful in comprehending customer requirements and responding with appropriate solutions.
