There is a very strong link between vascular risk, ischemic brain injury and dementia. My project focused on determining the mechanisms by which brain ischemia drives neurodegeneration and cognitive decline.

For the final year of the MPH, I worked with VicHealth on a project identifying potential areas of improvement in early years nutrition to reduce childhood obesity in Victoria and Australia. It involved researching, comparing and contrasting worldwide food-based dietary guidelines for the first 1000 days (conception to 2 years of age), examining the scientific evidence on links between elements of nutrition in the first 1000 days and childhood obesity, and researching successful interventions… Show more For the final year of the MPH, I worked with VicHealth on a project identifying potential areas of improvement in early years nutrition to reduce childhood obesity in Victoria and Australia. It involved researching, comparing and contrasting worldwide food-based dietary guidelines for the first 1000 days (conception to 2 years of age), examining the scientific evidence on links between elements of nutrition in the first 1000 days and childhood obesity, and researching successful interventions targeting nutrition in the first 1000 days. From these findings I produced recommendations for changes to the food-based dietary guidelines and infant food and drink regulations, and I also made suggestions for interventions to implement in Victoria. During my MPH, I was offered the opportunity to work on the Mitchell Shire Age-Friendly Community Survey project. The purpose of the survey was to understand the challenges faced by a broad range of older people living in Mitchell Shire, with the overall aim of developing a range of projects or programs to benefit older people, creating a more age-friendly community. I undertook the analysis of the qualitative survey data and wrote the report to a very tight time frame.

My post-doctoral studies focused on the T cell activation marker CD69 and a novel S1P1 agonist as neuroprotective agents following ischemic stroke. One project also studied the toxic effects of a modified version of tPA vs. normal tPA following ischemic stroke.
