About Vanessa Choo

During my tenure as a project consultant at UNESCO, I supported the project implementation of the UNESCO Qualifications Project (UQP) initiative through the coordination of UQP activities, contributing to progress reports, and drafting annual narrative reports on the UQP implementation. I also actively supported the communication strand activities for World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) 2023 and other global initiatives. My role extended to conducting in-depth desk research on countries involved in the UQP initiative and addressing communication issues with diverse stakeholders, including project officers, INGO representatives, and government officials. I also completed my master's of MA Educational Planning, Economics, and International Development at the University College London (UCL).I was previously an educator with 3 years of experience working with over 500 students for international, private and public educational institutions in various industries including customer service and education sectors. Independently developed, planned, and delivered individualised unit and lesson plan for an entire term of up to 50 students based on the IGCSE curriculum standards ranging from Form 1 to Form 5.

    The PISA 2022 reported that 40% of 15-year-old Malaysians did not meet the international standards in reading, mathematics and sciences while also experiencing one of the biggest decline in PISA scores globally even in comparison to other countries with similar economic profiles. With this, the Malaysian government, namely the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education and Yayasan Hasanah has collaborated to lead a nationwide initiative, Programme Anak Kita, to tackle the learning recovery issue particularly in foundational literacy and numeracy.Teach For Malaysia is one of the many implementation partners under the Programme Anak Kita and will be running Project KALIS (Kemahiran Asas Literasi dan Numerasi) in 105 schools in Johor. This 18-month project aims to support teachers and students in 'kelas pemulihan' (remedial class) in primary schools by preparing and utlising high quality toolkits, enhancing the capacity of teachers, and engaging the broader community in sustainably support the mastery of foundational literacy and numeracy skills among primary schools students.I am elated to be the Programme Management Senior Associate of Project KALIS in driving the larger goal of addressing the learning recovery in Malaysia. My responsbilities will include Project Monitoring and Reporting, Monitoring and Evaluation, Documentation and Project Finance Reporting, Operations and Coordination, and Stakeholder Engagement.
