About Vanessa Goryl

I love technology. It's out in the open now, in all its shameless glory, this self-confessed geek loves tech. Big, small and anywhere in between, it's fascinating. Don't get me wrong, I can't code much more than a humble hyperlink, but from planes to trains, hearing devices to software, I realise now that the tech gets me every time. Underneath it all, it's about leveraging technology to help us get things done, and that's what I do.There is, however, another part of me that is the Yin to my Yang, and that is people. People are what got me into HR in the first place. Highly capable people being overlooked for promotions, highly capable people being made redundant because keeping them as employees was deemed “too expensive” (doesn’t that sound like a luxury few can afford these days?) and building genuine relationships with people. Since HR kept getting the blame for the firing, I figured they also hold the power to manage retention. To effect real change in this space, I needed to move into HR; or so I thought.Fast forward some years and having recruited pilots at Qantas, planned the workforce needs to open the Epping Chatswood rail line at Sydney Trains, integrated multiple systems to deliver global HR dashboards and insights in performance, engagement and rewards at Cochlear, worked for 5 years in the NSW Public Service Commission including launching the first employee engagement survey and delivering digital transformation in the form of a new HCM platform, worked for 3 years as an HR tech-consultant and 2 years as a people leader, I have learned a lot about HR, technology, and myself. Experience has taught me that you can teach technical skills, everyone has strengths, teams that play to their strengths play better, and HR is not solely responsible for the hiring or firing, but they are powerful influencers in the conversation.Today, I am fulfilling my purpose for moving into HR, helping people understand their strengths and helping organisations to align individuals to their roles based on their individual strengths. It even matched me to my role, yes, my eclectic collection of strengths found a home! Every day I help people be happy and find a role that plays to their strengths, and I get to dabble in technology, which for me is the perfect combination of people and tech.

Vanessa Goryl Work Experience Details
  • Abilitymap
    Outcomes Director
    Abilitymap May 2022 - Present
By empowering others through our technology I help organisations achieve their business outcomes. With an ear to the ground hearing our client and candidate feedback, I guide our product development and design, informed by a strong background in HR Tech. Being outcomes-focused means I can shift my attention to where my mood takes me to deliver outcomes for our business and our clients, whether in consulting, coaching or training, or marketing, pre-sales or policy. This role plays to my strengths and stretches me each and every day, giving me the flexibility and variety I value so highly in my everyday life.
  • Pinpoint Hrm
    Practice Lead, Cornerstone Practice
    Pinpoint Hrm Jul 2020 - May 2022
    Australia
During my time in this role, our team more than doubled and I discovered what kind of a people leader I am. Monthly career conversations, weekly team meetings and resource planning became staple times we came together, along with some creative virtual events for our team that was based all over Australia and at times, overseas. Covid was a challenging time for most, and with many of our team members affected by lockdowns, I sure was glad to be part of such a caring team who support one another. I was proud every day to be surrounded by such highly capable, incredible people with a passion for what they do and genuine care for our clients. As a manager, you can't be happier than having a supportive, engaged and capable team.
  • Pinpoint Hrm
    Delivery Lead
    Pinpoint Hrm Jan 2020 - Jul 2020
As our team began to grow and change, I was fortunate to take on the role of Delivery Lead for our team. Moving into pre-sales allowed me to share my passion for, and knowledge of, the Cornerstone system and help organisations make an informed choice when selecting an HCM vendor. As Delivery Lead I also took on project management across all of the projects within our team.
  • Pinpoint Hrm
    Senior Consultant
    Pinpoint Hrm Sep 2019 - Dec 2019
As a Senior Consultant I worked on some large and complex implementation projects, conducted health checks and worked with clients to optimise their existing system. I developed our pre-implementation readiness support for clients to help them prepare for an implementation project and design their processes. I expanded my knowledge of custom API integrations to support connections with background checks, assessments and job boards.I also began mentoring new members to the team to support their upskilling in specific areas of the Cornerstone product and in managing projects. The flexibility to be creative with technology was a big part of this role and re-affirmed my passion for technology.
  • Pinpoint Hrm
    Consultant
    Pinpoint Hrm May 2017 - Aug 2019
    Sydney, Australia
In this role I delivered implementation and optimisation projects for clients across industries including financial services, superannuation, retail, insurance and real estate.Leaning on my previous experience, I specialised in recruitment and onboarding, talent and succession and compensation. In addition to system configuration and understanding requirements, I worked with clients on process design and upskilling the project team to make informed decisions and empower them to take ownership of the platform at the end of each project. It's very interesting working with so many people and so many different organisations, no two processes are the same and that's what makes this job fun. Being able to transform a clunky paper based system inhibiting a process into a streamlined, online system that supports the process is very rewarding.
  • Nsw Public Service Commission
Hr Systems Analyst - Senior Advisor
Nsw Public Service Commission Nov 2014 - May 2017
The Public Service Commission had decided it needed an online human capital management system, so I was chosen to represent the Commission on the evaluation panel to select a system and to lead the implementation project on behalf of the Commission. This project was a joint collaboration with the then Dept of Finance, Services and Innovation (now Dept Customer Service). I became the system administrator for the multi-department project team implementing Cornerstone OnDemand Performance and Learning modules as well as the project lead for the Commission. I learned a great deal about the NSW capability framework, system administration and governance, tenders, evaluations and contract negotiations. It was also in this role where I experienced the impact of a well planned, well executed change management and communication plan.I returned from maternity leave and delivered the People Matter Survey for 2017, which had not only grown since its first release, but had contributed to real change across the sector, which was a very satisfying outcome to see.
  • Nsw Public Service Commission
    Hr Business Analyst
Nsw Public Service Commission Mar 2012 - Nov 2014
In November 2011 the department I was in became the new Public Service Commission, and I moved into the workforce profile team. Working with all agencies of the public sector, I helped collect and manage workforce data via quarterly submissions and provide reports for a variety of research projects within the Commission.I was fortunate to work on the inaugural State of the Sector report in 2012, the first People Matter Survey for NSW also in 2012, and, upon my return from maternity leave, the redesigned Annual Workforce Profile Report in 2014.It was a very exciting time to be working in the public sector and interestingly, I learned a lot about the structure, public reporting and employee surveying of the other state, territory, federal and even UK governments as we defined our own path for NSW.
  • Department Of Premier And Cabinet (Nsw)
    Hr Policy Advisor
Department Of Premier And Cabinet (Nsw) Aug 2010 - Feb 2012
Interpreting legislation and advising the most senior members on all matters pertaining to the executives of the public sector is as complex as it sounds. With the change in government I experienced the impact of machinery of government changes and the legislative effect of the caretaker period which directly precedes and follows an election. Part of my role was to maintain executive service guidelines which connect the act, regulations, memos, directives, awards and policies that stipulate the employment conditions, and bridge any gaps, for the senior executive service. As well as policy and legislation interpretation, I did recruitment administration support advertising roles through Taleo, supported the performance planning and review process of the Directors General and gained insights into the merit selection principles and process of the public sector. It was here that I learned about the structure of clusters and departments, independent agencies and other government entities that make up the public sector, and the legislative provisions that govern their existence and statutory standing. This role was challenging for me but so rewarding and gave me such a deep understanding of, and greater appreciation for, the public sector.
  • Cochlear
    Hr Business Analyst
    Cochlear Apr 2008 - Aug 2010
This role brought my love of data to the fore and gave me the tools and the technology to bring it to life. As well as working on administering remuneration reviews including share plans, short and long term incentives, performance reviews and calibration, I analysed data, and lots of it. I was given the keys to the kingdom when I was allowed to build the universe in business objects, a business intelligence reporting tool, mapping the Oracle payroll data into the universe and create dashboards for the global HR leaders.I was then involved in headcount planning, a joint process between HR and Finance, so naturally was involved in designing and implementing the Hyperion Planning tool when we transitioned from Excel. I even dabbled in some code by designing a wiki site using rich text, wiki markup and HTML coding. Like all good business analysts I designed, conducted and analysed employee surveys, prepared annual reports and other workforce reports including EOWA. I was very lucky to learn a lot about hearing and hearing devices, the agility of a fast-paced tech company and be proud working for a highly regarded Australian company.
  • Railcorp
    Workforce Planner
    Railcorp Jan 2006 - Feb 2008
In this role I worked closely with the General Managers of the Service Delivery side of the organisation on their long term workforce plans. I helped prepare the organisation for the opening of a new rail line, delivery of new trains, manage the impact of the ageing workforce and introduce capability development to better manage succession.I gained insights into the career paths within RailCorp, the effect of superannuation policy on retirement plans, and the intricacy of an organisation of this size, age and technical complexity. I still think it's a tie between the RM-900 ballast cleaner and the track safety x-ray train for my favourite rail machine.
  • Qantas
    Recruitment Officer
    Qantas May 2004 - Dec 2005
For 12 months I worked in the pilot recruitment team where I supported some of the most rigorous and comprehensive recruitment and selection processes I've ever seen. It's no wonder Qantas holds such a high safety standing. I was also fortunate to work in the engineering division where I learned a thing or two about manufacturer, CASA and Qantas safety standards and helped write a set of flight manuals for Jetstar Asia's launch. Beyond the skills I learned from these roles, I learned a lot about working in a high security environment, where safety is the number one priority, way more about auxiliary power units than I ever expected and what it means to be part of a work family.
