About Vanessa Hale

Interests: The role of the microbiome in health,One Health, EducationMy research focuses on host, microbiome, environment interactions in relation to health and disease. Using a combination of 16S rRNA microbiome data along with, metabolomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, culture, and gnotobiotic mouse work, I evaluate how microbial communities respond to host factors such as diet or contribute to pathogen susceptibility and cancer development. Previously, I also examined the health and evolution of colobine monkeys through the gut microbial community. Many folivorous colobines fail to thrive in captivity - often exhibiting gastrointestinal (GI) problems including diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, bloat and GI obstruction. Evaluating underlying differences in the gut microbes of wild and captive snub-nosed monkeys will further our understanding of the gut microbiome in primate health and allow us to improve captive management practices.
