Climate change has affected different facets of our daily lives. One of these being a primary one such as food. The global population is expected to increase by 2.2 billion by 2050, which means the world's farmers will have to grow about 70% more food than what is now produced. Since our current agricultural methods will not be sustainable for much longer because more than 95% of micronutrients and 99.9% of pesticides do not reach their target, we are experimenting with different methods such as nanotechnology. My project analyzed the behavior of different nanoparticles in plant cells in order to understand their behavior to future develop nano carriers which aside from helping on crop growth, also reduce environmental impact of agrochemicals. We were able to identify patterns in different nanoparticle characteristics while exposed to protoplasts. The nanoparticles used were controlled engineered polymer and Layered Double Hydroxide nanoparticles. We used Arabidopsis thaliana protoplasts extracted by an enzyme solution following a previous protocol. We acquired the data using ICP-MS instrument and elaborating a t-test to analyze the statistical significance and difference. We proved that negatively charged polymer nanoparticles interact more with protoplasts in comparison to the positively charged nanoparticles. Comparing LDH nanoparticles surface chemistries we identified OH, Amine, and PEG were statistically different. For future work we would like to identify if the interaction of the nanoparticle and the protoplast is superficial or if it's going inside the cell.

Intern: Undergrad Tech For Crdm Cos Conversion

Villalba, Puerto Rico

Completed in Medtronic first opportunity in Medical Device Industry. As part of the Summer Intern opportunity I exposed to an industry dedicated to Alleviate pain, Restore health and Extend life. As part of my learning experience, I directly impacted continuous improvement projects in manufacturing lines. The experience enriched my knowledge in the following areas: Quality – focused in documentation ensuring first time quality (FTQ), applied lean six sigma knowledge, partner with team to create value stream maps (VSM) and executed time study in Cell Operating System (COS) manufacturing lines to guarantee line maturity. Applied manufacturing line re-layout previously designed. As part of this task completed line equipment movement, assess manufacturing Assemblers input and submit information to prepare Change Impact Form (CIF). During a brainstorming session for the transformation of a manufacturing line, teamed up with Assemblers, Quality Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers to identify opportunities and came up with a suggestion to develop a fixture to prevent scrap for a coil manufacturing part.

Identification And Quantification Of Ciprofloxacin And Paracetamol In Water Via Sers

Undergraduate research in the Analytical Chemistry Department focused on identifying a method and equipment to analyze Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCP's). I had to take equipment training for the use of Surfaced Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), prepared weekly reports, and presented results to Research Advisor and student forum. I confirmed the use of Raman Spectroscopy technology to identify and quantify PPCP’s in sub micromolar concentrations (below 10-6 µM) in water. Analyzed spectrum’s peaks as each according substance.Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are polluting surface water environments. This pollution is biomagnifying via emission from production industries, direct disposal fromhopitals or household centers, and ingestion and subsequent excretion after drug administrationto human or animal. This pharmaceuticals presence is of major importance due that it affects theecological environment as well as human health. Most of these pollutants are resistent tobiological degradation processes which means, that their constitution will stay almost intact afterwastewater treatments. With the use of Surface-enhanced Raman Sprectroscopy we will identifyand quantify PPCPs such as ciprofloxacin and paracetamol in water. The product of this researchwill provide useful information in future environmental studies. Raman Spectroscopy methoddemonstrated to contain a diverse range of pharmaceutical applications. Utulizing Ag/PDMS hasproven to be an experimental method to improve sensibility towards substance identificationduring the spectroscopy.

Biosorption Of Cu By Means Of Utilizing Citrus Limonum Peel Waste

Developed a research focused on Environmental Engineering and Environmental Chemistry. Performed processes entailing brainstorming to establish experimental instructions, considering several variables during experimental phase and process definition. Proved the biomass of citrus waste had 25% potential effect on the adsorption of the heavy metal Cu on polluted waters. Concluded that the biosorption method is a functional and effective one. Confirmed that this process to purify water may benefit communities that do not have resources to clean water, making it suitable forconsumption.Abstract:With the increase of industrialization, the amount of heavy metals in the environment has increased drastically. Due to their capacity for bioaccumulation and their harmful properties, they present a risk to the ecosystems in which they are found. According to NIH (National Institute of Health, 2012) an inadequate supply of them can lead to a variety of deficiencies, diseases and syndromes. Given this problem, this research aims to find an effective way to counteract the contamination with heavy metals in bodies of water, by using biomass created from the rind of Citrus limonum, citrus native to Asia, but introduced to all places of the world. To demonstrate the effectiveness of it, solutions with concentrations of 8 g / L and 16 g / L of CuSO4 were produced and the initial absorbance of these was measured with a spectrophotometer. Then, biomass was added to these solutions and, using a solution of deionized water and biomass as target, its absorbance was measured at different time points. The results showed that the biomass could reduce the absorbance of the solutions by 33% and 17% respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that, due to its removal capacity and cost-effectiveness, this biomass created from citrus waste can be an effective alternative to remove Cu present in contaminated water bodies.
