Vanessa Notley’s work plays with language (words and sounds, translations and entertaining idiomatic expressions and meanings) and with a certain humour and flexibility she seeks to give language a visual, tangible and sometimes nonsensical form in steel, fabric and on paper.The stainless steel head sculptures, “Ajouter du Flou” (Adding Fuzziness), “Off with her Head” and the three hair-dos “She’s come undone” evoke a sense of things coming apart, losing shape, wandering out of formation.Solid or set steel, by its very nature, does not lose shape, float or expand but here the heads lose a certain restraint; they suggest a sense of spilling out and over and an expansion towards the outside world that give a rather comical result of lopsidedness.The series of pencil drawings entitled “Sans Sens”, literally “without sense», shows 5 owls, with bands of translucent paper that cover parts of their bodies, their senses; eyes, ears, nose, beak, claws.Between caricature and scientific study, the decorative and meticulous, each drawing of the owl portrays the bird of night with a handicap, a hindrance…as a tethered, encumbered animal.Vanessa Notley is currently professor at the art college and has been responsible for the pedagogical service at the International Museum of Modest Art in Sète, France for the last three years.Before then she lived, worked and exhibited in Beijing and China, in Stuttgart, Germany and in various cities in France. She also studied and worked in the United States and then at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Bourges where she became a professor.She has been artist- in- residence at the Cité des Arts, le Château de la Napoule and at the Centre de Sculpture de Montolieu in France. In 2013 she was visiting artist at learning workshops at Tate Modern, UK.
