When I was a new graduate with a bachelor’s degree in finance, I accepted a tough assignment as the consumer credit supervisor at the headquarters of an automotive service chain. My job was to manage 2 people who were significantly older than me and bring all the latest financial and data analysis skills that I had just learned in school into a “We’ve always done it this way” environment. Despite the challenge, I soon won over my team and my co-workers as they saw the results of my new financial and forecasting reports, efficient processes, and operational standards. Since then, tough assignments have been my specialty.I moved into an associate finance director role for 4 auxiliary departments at the University of Pennsylvania. Again, the environment wasn’t ideal as finance and the operations of each of these departments were blaming each other for late bills and workflow issues. I scheduled monthly meetings to establish ongoing collaboration and helped each leader understand the financial impact of their decisions. This helped each one transform to act like true business owners of their department and eventually, they were all promoted as their performance and results improved significantly. Currently, I’m the senior financial planning and analysis at APCO Worldwide, a consulting firm with regional offices around the world. As the first hire in this role, I had to organize all past and present data, create financial models, and establish traceability and logic into the reporting. Once again, I fostered partnerships with the departments and regional offices, which minimized errors and late reporting while maximizing company collaboration and team performance.Now I’m seeking my next opportunity to bring financial and data analysis structure and optimization to an organization seeking its next level of success.
