The Python Software Foundation is a Delaware nonprofit corporation dedicated to growing and supporting the community around the Python programming language. In my capacity as General Counsel, I reorganized the foundation, including rewriting the bylaws and handling all necessary votes by the members, developed our trademark use policies, and established board-level recordkeeping and compliance according to Delaware corporate law.I also oversee all litigation, threatened and actual, manage our outside counsel, and handle compliance with labor laws (including benefits and termination) for our employees.

I was a Member in the San Antonio office of Dykema, a national law firm. I advised clients on IP strategy, the emerging law around autonomous vehicles, open source, strategic patent portfolio management, analysis, and valuation.

I had multiple roles at Rackspace, working both as Associate General Counsel and as VP of Technology in the Office of the CTO.As Vice President of Intellectual Property and Associate General Counsel, I directed Rackspace's Intellectual Property program, setting our strategy and policy around patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, and open source matters. I oversaw our patent litigation, successfully defending Rackspace against all infringement assertions while simultaneously reducing our overall cost of litigation by millions of dollars.I was part of the M&A and commercial contracts teams, drafting and negotiating essential terms for Rackspace’s largest customers, including the largest contract in the history of Rackspace ($125M+). I also led the successful acquisition and integration of a startup, and I restructured another acquisition resulting in $20M savings for Rackspace. I also led Rackspace's public policy team, working with Congress and the administration to help advance our positions on privacy, trade, immigration, encryption, and other national matters. I was Rackpace’s representative on the board of the Internet Association and I testified in Congressional proceedings as an expert on both copyright and encryption policy.In my role as VP of Technology, I led the acquisition of Litestack, a company developing "serverless"​ cloud technology, and was general manager of Litestack for a year before we folded it into the larger organization. I also ran Rackspace's elite technical corps, known internally as the "TCT,"​ and represented Rackspace to the technical press and acted as liaison to various community organizations.

The OpenStack Foundation manages the growing ecosystem around the OpenStack Cloud Computing system. I was a director of the Foundation, active on the Legal Affairs Committee and the DefCore Committee.

In my capacity as chairman of the board of directors, I quadrupled our fundraising; more than doubled the size of the membership worldwide; reworked our budgeting system to provide real-time forecasts of our spending and expected financial position; and hired and managed the PSF's current full-time executive team.

At Verio (formerly iServer, later NTT/Verio) I architected and did primary development on "Ellis," a distributed system for moving thousands of customers at a time between hosting platforms. As of 2017, Ellis is still Verio's central intra-account migration tool as well as the mechanism for all incoming customer migrations from OEM clients, resulting in monthly recurring revenue of over 25 million dollars.Earlier at Verio, I was an in-house ecommerce specialist; I developed process automation tools to reduce development and customer wait time; and I designed an internal enterprise document management system (similar to Documentum).
