Advised by Prof. Robin Selinger, I worked in the LCI's primary theory and modeling group. Currently, we are investigating active matter on non-linear surfaces and photo-actuated liquid crystal elastomers; in collaboration with Luca Giomi at the Lorentz Institute of Leiden Universiteit and D.J. Broer at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, respectively. By implementing our numerical simulations using Nvidia's CUDA, we develop efficient, modern source code that runs at the Ohio Supercomputing Center and can also be debugged on a less capable PC.

Active matter consists of any system driven out-of-equilibrium by the conversion of ambient energy into internal stresses. Often, this results in the production of dynamical states that do not obey certain fundamental principles of equilibrium mechanics and, therefore, cannot be fully understood through a conventional lens. Biology adopts many active processes in Vivo to achieve functionality at faster time and longer length scales than in equilibrium conditions. Several academic communities, including soft matter, biochemical, biomedical, etc, are studying the connections between the elementary composition of these systems and the subsequent hierarchical structures they produce so to better understand what nature has already employed and to inspire new innovations in meta materials. My studies include molecular dynamics simulations of flexible self-propelled filaments on non-linear surfaces to investigate how these systems may be controlled/utilized in biomimetic device design.
Liquid Crystal Institute
Characterization of ferroelectric discotic liquid crystals.
Instruction, evaluation, and preparation of college physics 2 laboratory sections. The coursework ranges from introductory electromagnetics to basic electronic circuitry.
Electrospun fibers incorporating ferroelectric bent-core liquid crystals to introduce piezoelectric functionality. Optical characterization and production methods of such fibers were studied in detail.
