After obtaining the Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from University of Surrey in 2011, Varuna worked as a work package leader of a Large Scale Integrated Project "ROMEO" funded by the European Commission. During the time he was with University of Surrey, both as a Ph.D. student and as a research fellow, he developed a highly significant publication record in the area of image and video processing, which includes 12 highly cited IEEE Transactions, and an IEEE consumer electronic society award. To pursue a career in the industry, in November 2013, he joined Apical Ltd, where he worked as a new algorithms developer for imaging and display systems to be run on efficient hardware platforms. The algorithms he developed were realized in nearly 500 million devices around the globe, and a patented technology for CMOS cameras, for which he is the lead inventor which appeared in nearly 90% of CCTV cameras in the world. Since May 2016, he assumed duties as a lecturer in digital engineering at Loughborough University, where he was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in Jan 2020. He is the module leader for Principles of Data Science, Bayesian Methods in Deep Learning, Statistical methods in Finance, and Gaming Technologies and Simulation. He is the recipient of two EPSRC grants in the area of next generation machine intelligence, and complementary industrial funding. He currently has active industrial collaborations with Royal Mail, Chelsea Football Club, Dallas Mavericks (USA/NBA) and NewsUK, and academic research collaborations with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He currently leads the Machine Intelligence Lab at Loughborough University, and is the principle supervisor of one Post-doctoral research fellow and 6 Ph.D. students, and the co-supervisor of 1 PhD student. His team works on Engineering application of Artificial Intelligence, specifically Multi-Agent Reinforcement learning, multimodal computer vision, and simulation models, with a Vision to scale state-of-the-art AI algorithms to real world Engineering systems. Currently, my job profile is to develop new algorithms on the Apical's world leading Iridix platform and for the Apical's Image Signal Processing (ISP) pipeline. Project: Adaptive Lens Shading CorrectionI was responsible for the design of automatic color shading correction block for the Apical ISP. I was able to come up with a new algorithm that that is able to correct luminance and color shading artifacts, without the need for Light source identification. The initial algorithm was refined to be a hardware friendly implementation. The algorithm is currently going through hardware implementation. Patent Filed: GB1512281.5: Adaptive shading correction Date Lodged: 14 July 2015Project: Purple Fringing CorrectionPurple fringing is a typical distortion in CMOS sensors caused by imperfections in the lens fabrication. I designed the purple fringing correction block for the Apical ISP. Purple fringing is caused by lens flare in CMOS Imagers. The algorithm developed is currently going through image quality verification and architectural optimizations for FPGA implementation. Project: Efficient ambient light filteringThe most important aspect of Apical's Assertive display is to adapt display contents to ambient light conditions. The ambient light sensor on a typical smartphone has a quite narrow angle response. This project involved developing temporal filtering techniques to overcome limitations of narrow angle ambient light sensors. The design was driven by various user experiments, and resulted in a very efficient hardware architecture based on a simple state machine. The aim of the QoE task is to measure the experience and satisfaction of the users who will be using the particular system. Within this task, we modeled and developed metrics to measure the effect of quantization, network delays and packet losses on the 3D viewing experience. -

Here, I was responsible for designing and development of a web based telecommunication traffic monitoring system, using the call detail records generated by the telecommunications switch.
