About Varun Dwaraka, Phd

I am a scientist with extensive proven experience in the development of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS; RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, Bisulfite Seq) and array-based (Affymetrix, EPIC Array) analytical pipelines using univariate, multivariate, and machine learning methods. I am also skilled in analyzing single-cell NGS datasets (e.g. single-cell RNA-Seq), and the associated tools available to do so. I have proven expertise in the visualization, and interpretation, of results for the end goal of publishing research. I am also an effective communicator, presenting at international and national conferences in poster presentations and talks. I also routinely publish as a primary or co-author in international, peer-reviewed journals. I have worked in non-model and model organisms, generated bioinformatic resources for the scientific community, published peer-reviewed articles, and successfully designed data analysis pipelines to answer various questions related to regeneration biology, disease progression, cancer biomarker identification, sex-based gene expression differences, and ageing research.I am passionate about learning and implementing machine learning methods to advance predictive medicine and advance our understanding of the biology of aging. As an educator, I am passionate about sharing knowledge that balances approachability and accuracy. This is a responsibility I take seriously, as I hope that knowledge transfer opens doors for others to new fields while ensuring accurate knowledge is ingested. I employ this passion through lectures at national and international conferences, and lectures through my faculty positions at the American Board of Precision Medicine and the Geneva College of Longevity Science.

As the Director of Bioinformatics for TruDiagnostic, I am tasked with guiding the development and implementation of pipelines that analyze DNA methylation measurements from blood and saliva samples quantified on the Illumina EPIC array. These pipelines output biological age metrics computed from published epigenetic clock algorithms, as well as a few metrics reported by algorithms, developed internally. For research development, I serve as a Principal Investigator in collaborations with academic/research institutions on projects such as developing and assessing epigenetic predictors (e.g., epigenetic clocks, surrogate estimates). We contribute to the experimental design of projects handling epigenomic, genomic, and transcriptomic datasets, the analysis and interpretation of the data, and writing of studies. Currently co-authored and primary author on >15 publications (peer-reviewed and pre-prints).
