Ceremonies Staging Agency was an organisation solely devoted to arranging the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.My primary responsibility was making the modern technology go alongside with needs of our Computer Graphics / Visual Effects department to deliver motion graphics and 3D renders for the Ceremonies under pressure of tight deadlines. I was working closely with the CG team throughout the whole process, since deep understanding of the workflow was crucial for carrying out the optimal technological solutions. An important part was being a communicator between IT and CG departments, ensuring smooth interaction between the two teams.Key achievements:• With careful architecture planning, automation of deployment and system configuration management along with deep resource and service monitoring, I ensured smooth operation of 80-node render farm with zero critical incidents in two years of its operation in 24/7 mode.• As the render farm was operating in hybrid Linux / Windows mode to support different CG software, I developed a custom web UI, which allowed members of CG team to change farm configuration on the fly anytime, without submitting request to IT team. This enhanced team's workflow and allowed for best possible resource utilization.• By analyzing the workload and fine-tuning storage systems' parameters to suit the particular workflow of the CG team, I managed to double storage system performance in typical tasks, eliminating 90% of performance-related incidents and speeding up delivery of media material.• Fully automated OS and software provisioning of render farm with DRBL, CloneZilla, SaltStack and Python / Shell scripts, allowing for rapid changes in system configuration when required.• Thanks to implementation of a two-tier backup scheme, there were zero data loss incidents in two years of operation, and in ~10 occurrences of data deletion due to human error, 100% of files were recovered.
