Before he retired, Martin built up over 25 years in the IT industry in a variety of technical and managerial roles and environments. Before that, he worked in Broadcasting Engineering Research in the BBC on a number of projects including Radio Data Systems (RDS - as used in car radios). He designed the world's first portable RDS receiver in 1984! He also designed a small, wind-powered inexpensive transmitter for communities sited in hard-to-reach hilly areas in the late 1970's - decades before Green Energy came to everyone's attention.From this solid engineering background Martin moved into IT and started project-managing the installation of IT systems and networks. This lead to IT infrastructure and operational roles in the broadcasting and financial services sectors and finally into the management of these activities in recent years.Towards the end of his career Martin helped BNP Paribas refurbish its UK headquarter building by project managing the refurbishment of all the building's important facilities, plant and equipment.Since retiring in 2020, Martin has become a key volunteer at a local Repair Cafe, helping the Cafe adapt as it grows from under ten active volunteers to over thirty, with the jobs and requests to match.
