About V. Blue Lemay -

The group that I founded, THINK, created a culture shift at Excelsior University. The collective expertise and wisdom of the group changed course development and what is considered acceptable in course design. Under my co-leadership, the group structured innovation right into the very structure of the institution. For example, I enabled developers to improve courses by curating and showcasing library of new learning objects. I was also invited to be the Co-Chair with the Excelsior University Provost on the Middle States Steering Committee for reaccreditation from Middle States Commission of Higher Education (MSCHE). The university was reaccredited, maintained financial aid, and degrees and programs were recognized as sound after producing a 100-page report based on a 2.5 year self-study. I oversaw the MSCHE standards Working Groups, including vice presidents and executive directors. As an award-winning education leader, I am committed to promoting inclusive and culturally aware education that makes my students better professionals—and better people--by working collaboratively with the faculty on course and curriculum design. To this end, I apply research-based best practices from the learning sciences, and I leverage technology tools to both build and update courses, with a focus on a consistent and engaging student experience.I co-created, co-produced, and co-led 30+ virtual and in-person courses, workshops, and tech roundtables for students and aspiring leaders such as: --Teaching Slam: Immerse, Engage, Educate--Is There an Elephant in the Room? Increasing Student Engagement--We Don’t Do That Here: Debunking Our Assumptions about Teaching and Course Design--Roll the Dice: Innovating a Shared Vision for Course Design --How Do I Get Outta Here? The Use of Escape Rooms in Higher Education--Scavengers Assemble: The Hunt for Student EngagementI am particularly proud of the online scavenger game that I created at the start of our reaccreditation process. I instructed 300 students, staff, faculty, and administrators about how to download and play. It was a fun team building event that also informed everybody of the required evidence that we gathered from data, assessments, processes, and procedures to meet reaccreditation standards. I coached the top administrators of their units to write both highly engaging and informative “missions” because we wanted this self-study to be an inclusive process. As co-chair of the self-study, I helped reaccredit the institution.

Achieved 91% satisfaction rate and 100% learning content rate and achieved 88% student satisfaction rate and 6.32/7 overall course quality.---Introduction to Professional Ethics is now required in 27 undergraduate programs with 6.14/7 instructor quality, 6.01 course impact and 6.02 course design quality rate; persuaded SME to accept self-directed and self-assessment approach in one discussion per module, created branching scenarios with Articulate Storyline tool.

I enjoyed the interplay between established and innovative styles of pedagogy. In my classes, I strove to combine all of my creativity, personality, and intellectual energy when I juxtaposed literary or visual texts in unique ways. For example, when I taught my course on Shakespeare in Popular Culture, I ensured that students received a thorough appreciation for Shakespeare’s plays, within their own historical, cultural, and theatrical context. In addition, I challenged students in their major assignments to extend their knowledge of Shakespeare by examining, for instance, how Midsummer Night’s Dream functioned as a graphic novel, how the original Macbeth was used or misused by television producers, or how Romeo and Juliet was made relevant for a modern audience through rappers, film, or computer software. (see sample Shakespeare syllabus).My research focused on the “religious turn” in literary criticism, which emerged out of continental philosophy and postmodern theology. I found this field to be provocative because of its radical commitment to epistemological uncertainties, one that described a God who can be seen and known only from a place of unknowing (see article below).
