ARPA-E invests in disruptive ideas to create America’s future energy technologies. The Agency’s mission is to accelerate transformational energy and emissions mitigating innovations that will fundamentally change the way we use, generate, and store energy. Fellows perform technical due diligence, identify R&D projects, and manage investments across a range of emerging technologies for the DOE’s high-risk, high-reward funding agency, ARPA-E.• Conducted technical reviews for the OPEN 2018 program portfolio, which included assessing hundreds of proposals, aiding in project selection, and negotiating technical milestones, ultimately leading to $98M invested across 40 different energy technology projects.• Spearheaded program development in the area of bioengineering for materials manufacture and carbon sequestration, and performed technical analysis to define program scope and metrics; currently formulating a targeted funding announcement in this area.• Organized workshops on the autonomous control of next generation advanced nuclear reactors, and the application of bioinspired design to energy technology.• Served as a technical expert at NASA’s iTech innovation competition, and participated in funding reviews for DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy and the National Science Foundation.

Thesis and research topic: Design, fabrication, and characterization of 3D nanolattice photonic crystals for band gap and refractive index engineering

Worked within the Systems Evaluation Division developing a technical assessment of a materials processing qualification program relevant to the F-22 Raptor fighter aircraft and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

First employee at Crop Enhancement within the Soane Labs incubator. Worked on the formulation and characterization of novel microporous and biodegradable polymer nanoparticles for the encapsulation of agriculture chemicals and seed coatings. Engaged with clients in leading domestic and international chemical companies about this technology.

Technician in the Tuschl RNA-binding protein lab. Worked on mRNA synthesis and characterization.

Member of the Aizenberg Biomimetics and Biomineralization Laboratory. Worked on the synthesis of metallic and copper sulfide nanoparticles to investigate nucleation and growth mechanisms, and the self-assembly of particles into nanowires on structured surfaces. Prepared colloidal PMMA polymer structures and silica inverse opal films for applications as photonic crystal waveguides and catalysts. Explored patterned silicon substrates with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols to study the mechanism of oriented crystal growth and nucleation.
