About Víctor Hernández

Hey there!I'm Víctor, a former Chemistry Undergraduate from UPRRP who always had a strong passion for STEM-related subjects.During my first year, I discovered I had a knack for helping teach complex concepts to a couple of my friends, which led me to become a tutor for General Chemistry. My obsession with STEM weirdly translated into enrolling on up to 7 courses each semester, most of which were Physics, Math and Chemistry major classes. My unending curiosity for these topics, coupled together with my newfound passion for teaching, led me to become a tutor for soon-to-be-freshman high school graduates on a program (called "Inmersión") meant for them to skip taking Undergraduate Precalculus and instead land directly on Calculus. I did this for 2 years straight. On my third year, though, I took my first Computer Science class and (re-)fell in love with coding (since I had taken a course in high school prior to that). So much so that I ended up re-declaring my majors to Computer Science and Physics (even though I was already 👌 this close to graduating from Chemistry and Mathematics). After that, in my final undergraduate years, I basically ended up working part-time as a PHP and Java Software Developer, a Data Structures & Algorithms tutor, a Machine Learning Research Assistant and learned a couple of other stacks on my free time (MERN, MEAN, etc.) There were a couple of internships intertwined between as well (see more below).Upon graduation, ended up receiving an offer from BrainHi, where I mostly worked with React and Django. I ended up learning more about what Software Engineering was and how to collaborate with teams (including Sales, CS, Marketing, etc.) Fast-forward and I had been promoted to Engineering Team Lead where I helped lead a team of 5 SWEs, owned the on-call, gave technical insights as to how to build new systems and accommodate the growing demand from our existing users and our prospective clients. After a while, I decided to take a break to regain my strengths, since non-stop grinding will take its toll sooner rather than later. However, during this break I regained my love for coding, problem-solving and building systems that can be of use for hundreds, thousands or even more people. If you'd like to connect, please don't think twice! I'm always open to chat.

Worked with the mechanics of the unbraiding of DNA molecules in the lab of Dr. Edwin Quiñones. Specifically, we made torque, force, angular velocity and other types of dynamic variable measurements. We basically bind one end of the double–stranded DNA to a glass surface, then attach superparamagnetic beads to the other end, to which we apply a magnetic field so as to “braid” the molecules, and study the unbraiding process with an inverted microscope. My role in the project is to try and attain information from the z–axis of the DNA molecule. Namely, we’re trying to develop a method to determine its extension after forcing it to make a given number of turns. The results from this project might help better understand the physics of DNA replication and other cellular processes, which in turn might help develop an understanding of DNA–related diseases, which can include genetic ones and even cancer.
