About Thomas Van Damme

I’m a researcher with a knack for developing innovative solutions to complex problems. Over the years my career has taken some interesting twists and turns—starting in underwater archaeology and 3D recording, shifting focus to misinformation research during the COVID-19 pandemic, and now exploring the critical issue of AI governance.I flourish when given the freedom to explore, follow my curiosity, and take a deep dive into whatever issue is fascinating me most. Along the way, I've recovered artefacts from ancient shipwrecks, seen my work featured in National Geographic Magazine, won the largest hackathon ever organized, developed tools to monitor foreign information campaigns, and had my research praised by a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist (still a career highlight!). With a background in International Relations and Diplomacy, I combine a broad understanding of global affairs with an ability to unpack the technical details of an issue. I feel most fulfilled when my research has real-world impact, and am always looking for ways to bridge big-picture thinking with practical solutions.
