Despite a large number of both commercial and academic methods for Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR), most existing approaches are focused on a specific license plate (LP) region (e.g. European, US, Brazilian, Taiwanese, etc.), and frequently explore datasets containing approximately frontal images.My project proposes a complete ALPR system focusing on unconstrained capture scenarios, where the LP might be considerably distorted due to oblique views.My main contribution is the implementation of a robust pipeline capable of detecting and rectifying multiple distorted license plates in a single image, which is fed to an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) method to obtain the final result.As an additional contribution, I also manage to implement the ALPR on the Indian traffic data which was the most challenging part since the traffic density is high here, making it difficult for the model to detect vehicles and license plates.One more task was to generalize the OCR for different regions like India, Germany, and Vietnam.
