Tomás is passionate about developing assistive technologies, but more generally, he wants to design the human of the future (he wants to be a Cyborg!) - to create new and extend existing human sensory, motor, and cognitive abilities in order to enhance human performance beyond natural baseline. For this, he is developing new input and output interfaces to increase the bandwidth between humans and computers. Using these augmentative devices, he hopes to learn how the brain structurally and functionally reorganizes to accommodate new synthetic senses, control capabilities, and cognitive prostheses. He is interested in how neural plasticity can be exploited, how humans learn and encode information, and how perception can be affected (and possibly engineered!) at a conscious and subconscious level. He holds a double-major in Computer Science and Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley, and a Master's in Media Arts and Sciences from the MIT Media Lab.

Co-Founder, Ceo & CtoAugmental Nov 2019 - PresentSan Francisco, Ca, UsSeamless interfaces for hands-free human-computer interaction and intimate health tracking. -
Graduate Student ResearcherMit Media Lab Sep 2017 - Sep 2019Cambridge, Massachusetts, UsI developed wearable devices for cognitive enhancement for applications in information access, sleep engineering, and emotional regulation. My work has been presented in conferences in computer science and media arts, including CHI, UIST, Ars Electronica, and Beijing Media Arts Biennale. The Fluid Interfaces group creates wearables to support in-the-wild interventions, rather than for use in laboratory settings. Our work is highly interdisciplinary and combines insights and methods from human-computer interaction, body sensor technologies, machine learning, brain-computer interfaces, psychology, and neuroscience. -
InternNeuralink Jun 2018 - Aug 2018Fremont, California, UsWorked in multiple areas of the brain-computer interface stack, including electrophysiology, networking, embedded systems, hardware design and assembly, microfabrication, and robotics. In more detail, I worked on electrophysiology analysis, inter-platform data streaming, multi-device clock synchronization, cable design and assembly, PCB design, testing and characterization of device encapsulation in brain-like conditions, micro-scale device assembly using a flip chip bonding machine, and electrical hardware and control software for robotic systems to automate needle micro-polishing. -

Co-Founder And Software/Hardware EngineerVibrotact May 2014 - Sep 2014Received funding from Tencent's Innovation Program to design and develop a product of our choice in 10 weeks. We built an open source platform for developers to create inexpensive, miniaturized, wearable haptic feedback devices. With minimal effort and technical knowledge, users are able to map sensor data to customizable haptic gestures across an array of micro-vibration motors worn on the arm.
